Nvidia GeForce4 Problems in 4600
I bought a new Dimension 4600 for my father. It came with winxp, which ran fine.
But the wordprocessing software we use is not working in XP so we ended up in WIN98 SE.
The problem is with Video Card Drivers. I have nvidia Geforce4 MX 440 AGP8X, Hardware Version is 162.
Downloaded the drivers from Nvidia web site for win98 and installed. But when I bootup my PC it gives error message and says "Your Display Adapter conflicts with another device in your computer."
Further It says.
The Device can not find any free Input / output I/O range [I/O] resources to use: Code 12
In the confilicting device list: Memory Rang 00000000 - 00ffffff used by System board extension for ACPI BIOS.
Driver Provide is Nvidia date is 11-26-2003.
Bios Version is A07 of Dimension 4600.
I have installed the mother board / chipset drivers. From Intel web site and from Dell web site. Both did not make any difference.
I try installing other VGA cards in PCI slots. Faced same issues with those cards as well.
Any one, any one in this world can come forward and help me. I will appreciate.

There is no Onboard Video.

Hi,
It could be conflicting with the onboard video...
Go into the bios and check that the primary video controller is set to AUTO, aslo go into device manager and disable the onboard video, see if that helps..

Sorry, i thought all the 4600's had onboard video aswell as AGP slot... didn't know they sold two types of 4600 :(

there is a onboard video for every motherboard.... so i can say that 4600 as well has 8300 and XPS all have onboard video but they are probably disabled because of the vid card on the agp slot....
i would try shunney's advice

Ha Ha
Believe me there is no on board VGA in 4600 I have with me. I physically checked and also confirmed from dell web site.
I tried shunney's advice as well, no difference.
Today I upgraded to new Bios A08, no difference.
This is a problem not only with me, a bunch of other people are also having the same problem.
And I know there is a solution to this problem with some one. What that solution is I have to find out. Promise If I find it, will post it here as well.

Hi there,
I believe you, i think theres been a little misunderstanding..... not all motherboards have onboard video, but there are two types of 4600, one with onboard and one with out...
Anyway , i may have found the answer to your problem.... your wanting to run an older program that wont run under Win XP... i just remembered that Xp has a program compatability mode, thats how i got one of my old games to run....

Obviously it means reinstalling Xp, but its alot better o/s than win98
Give it a try anyway and let us know how you get on :)

I made it. It is working fine now.
Here is what I did.
I did a fresh install of 98SE with this line:
e:\win98\setup /p i
Install completed, and the Std VGA was installed, unlike before.
Installed the nVidia drivers from their web site.
Problem statement: Windows relies on the bios for initial irq settings, whether ACPI is enabled
on the system or not.
ACPI handeling in WIN98 is kind of poor. That was causing problem with allocation of necessary
resources for VGA.
Solution: Install win98 like this.
d:\win98\setup /p i
This /p will disable ACPI.
