Left click on the file you want to open to highlight it. Hold the shift key down and right click on it, and select Open With. Choose the program you wish to use to open the file. If you're sure you want that to be the program you always use for that file type, put a check in the Always Use This Program To Open This Type Of File box. It should thereafter use your selection to open files of that type.

I opened a temp internet file:I don't remember what text. But afterwards all my temp internet files had ~in front of them and they all switched to word pads.Then today I tried sending an attachment to myself of something I scanned and when I opened it: it was in that crazy computer jargen..with numbers and squares. (That was a pdf. file)I opened in my e-mail that was all screwed up.

First you should delete all of your temporary internet files. These files are junk and will continue to build up in your folder until it is bursting. The file you tried to open (.pdf) is associated with Adobe Acrobat Reader. It is a Portable Document File. You must use this reader to open these types of files. If you don't currently have Adobe, you can download it for free
right here. After you install the reader, you can open any .pdf file and Adobe will automatically startup by itself.

People don't normally try to open temporary internet files. This folder is just a dumping ground for sites that you have visited while online. Most of the time, you would look inside the History folder for info. concerning these sites. You can delete any files inside this folder on either a daily or weekly basis and all would be fine.
Joe the boss ..I had adobe 2..just down loaded adobe 4.5...that was my problem!! adobe 2 wasn't picking up my pdf. files for some reason. Thats why I was getting everything in computer format or what ever. Thanks so much for all your help. What a dunce I is!!

You used the wrong application for the file you opened. What file extension is it? .txt etc.
