Optiplex 7040 micro configuration questions

Funnily enough, I have the same queries...

I have one on order, arriving Tuesday hopefully...

I ordered it with a 500Gb mechanical drive, and I am going to buy a NVMe drive to add in afterward and clone the drive over...  Then I will see what happens with two drives in it.

Looking at the ordering specification you can pick 2.5 SSD's, M.2 SATA SSD's and it specifically mentions M.2 PCIe drives...

So... I am assuming it is... But I'll be getting mine (for a client) and popping the hood before it goes to site :-D

Just so you know...

I have a 7040M with a 2.5" hard drive in it, and also an M.2 NVMe drive.

It's fast. Stupidly fast...

I bought the NVMe drive third party, for what it was worth (and had to reinstall due to the stupid secure boot stuff going on!).

But it's screaming away on Windows 10...

How is the fan noise with your unit?

I had access to an early sample and it was pretty loud (fan wise).

Got a 7040 SFF, 43-45 DB. Quite loud!

Does anyone have a noise levels for 7040 Micro? Does it compare with 9020/3020 Micro?

Based on the messure I took compared to the specks of the 3020. It is higher.

I got a new Micro 7040 last week and it came with a m2 pci-e boot drive, 8GB of DDR4 & I put a 2.5" evo 850 SSD in there too.  It's a super fast micro desktop ( gets a passmark score of 3000), but man is it noisy!!!! 

2 issues combine to make working with this device a very unpleasant audible experience. 

1 - The FAN is so very quick to respond to any workload on the system. For example it whines much louder as soon as you do anything...like watch a video or even open a media heavy webpage.  As soon as you close the webpage, it gets noticeable quieter.

2 - The pitch of the FAN noise itself is noticeably unstable. More than any other PC fan I have heard. It has 'Whaaaaaa aaa' type noise..and the pitch is all over the place. it's very distracting.

The noise combined with the FAN spinning up and down faster and slower with almost every mouse click combines for a problem I think Dell should address. I may even open a support ticket. I've had to hide the desktop on the floor behind my desk to try and muffle the noise. 

So you get a Boom Box Radio TURNED ALL THE WAY UP to put next to it and it will be less noisy.

I called in support complaining about how loud the system was and they sent me a new fan assembly with a non painted/aluminum heatsink for my 7040 micro.  The fan seems to be a little less noisy.  The fan doesn't have blades that go to the center like the sunon one that came with the system, but instead has blades at the tips of the fan.  It still spins up and can get loud but doesn't seem as bad as the previous one.

I know this is a year old this thread.  I just ordered a 7040 it came with a Toshiba NVME m.2 256gb.  It is setup in raid from dell.  I see raid and ahci isn't there suppose to be an Nvme choice.  I see them in the z170 mobos.  I do not see this for dell.  So I am assuming these drives are just using  ahci but for ssd we need nvme to take advantage of the crazy speeds.  So even bios 1.4.5 still no nvme choice.  Is this something dell is working on.  These nvme drives do not seem to be going more than 600mbps.  Also win 10 is looping cant sign in or make an admin acct.  

Did you definitely get the PCIe NVM SSD? Not the SSD in NVM format? They are two different things (as I have discovered) and indeed, the speeds don't hit the 1000mbps mark if they don't.

But I am definitely getting that speed on my 7040 Micro.

I'm remote from the unit at the moment, but I haven't seen NVM on either my 7040 Micro, or my M3510, but they are definitely PCIe NVM SSD's and they are both getting 1000mbps+
