Optiplex 745 Memory Question

I'm considering purchasing an Optiplex 745 and was wondering if I have to select memory of a certain speed to run in dual channel memory mode.  It comes with the options of 566, 667, and 800 MHz speeds. TIA.

juno5000,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Looks like if you use 1 stick of 512 memory it will run single channel. Here are the memory specs.

Memory
Type 533, 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Memory connectors 2
Memory modules supported 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, or 2 GB non-ECC
Minimum memory Dual-channel: 512 MB
Single-channel: 512 MB (single stick)
Maximum memory 4 GB
BIOS address F0000h

Thank you for your reply.  I would like to run in dual-channel memory mode  but what is the minimum speed memory I need to enable dual channel memory:  533, 667, or 800 MHz?  Sorry for the confusion.

Also, I checked the online specs for the Optiplex 745 but it states that there are four memory connections, not two like you posted.  Is this a mistake?

Here is  link to the specs ...

Dual channel only requires 2 or 4 dimms. It isn't dependent on the speed of the memory. It will obviously only run at the speed of the slower dimm.

I have a similar question:

I have an Optiplex 745 with a Core 2 Duo E6600 CPU.
So, this CPU runs at 2.4Ghz, with a 1066Mhz FSB.  However, the bus speed of the system is only 266Mhz (so the main bus is quad-pumped up to 1066Mhz into the CPU.  266x4 = 1066Mhz).

So, therefore, the fastest DDR2 ram I should use is DDR2-533 (266mhz x 2 = 533mhz).

My question is, under what circumstances would one use DDR2-800 ram on this system?  To take advantage of the DDR2-800 you would need to be running a 400Mhz system bus.  Does the motheboard even support this???  What CPU do you need in there so that the 400Mhz bus is enabled??
