optiplex Gx1 a03-a04 boot problems

Question

I resently installed a 866p3 in to my gx1 from what i have heard this is no horible thing now that i have flashed the bios to a04 the sys seems to boot but no monitor no beeps nonthing i have a copy of a10 and a07 down loaded from the dell website but cant install them if nonthing is working if any one has any ideas let me know   urgc7 is the servace tag and at present it has a quantom fireball 4g drive i have a 13 a 12 and that maby be put in it latter but with no bios this is imposible any help would be nice Message Edited by tool103 on 12-08-200610:03 AM

whell i removed all ram hds changed the processer back to stock and pulled all pci cards and un pluged all power i have installed ao7 and it worked with the old processer fine i have puit the 866 back in and the same thing happened i assume that this means i need to pull everything oout and let it reset again is their anything im missing

Your problem is that the 866MHz processor uses a 133MHz FSB and this won't work on the GX1.  You need a 100MHz FSB processor.  You must stay with BIOS A07 and no higher for processors 600MHz and above to work.  You could also go for a socket 370 100MHz FSB processor on a super slocket III (other slokets don't tend to work in the GX1) in which case you can use Coppermine Celerons at up to 1.1GHz.  Powerleap used to make an adaptor for the Tualatin Celerons and PIIIs.

ah ok thank u very much i never thought about the buss speed being a big problem since it did work before i flashed the bios but with all the problems i will take ur word fore it and get a new one

Actually it might work if you Update to Bios A07 for a GX1.
Then you clear the cmos and remove the speed jumper or set to 266.

The cpu would run at 650mhz.

A 533 for example needs the jumper set at 400mhz
because 4 x 133 = 533.

133mhz cpus work but they do not necessarily all work.
Not due to that part but due to voltage for the cpu not being
correct.

This is why A slot to socket adaptor is usually required for
faster cpus.

Saying that a cpu doesnt work just because of the 133 bus
is completely wrong.

It does work but does not run at the expected speed.
Bios should be set to A07 and no higher.

The consensus in the forum is that 133MHz socket 370 coppermine CPUs on any slocket never seem to work;  and that 133MHz slot 1 CPUs sometimes work.  I don't recall many posts confirming the latter, although you have reported they do sometimes work.  Of course, the forums tend to only get the negative posts here complaining of failure rather than positive ones saying they do work, so that may be a reason for a lack of posts of success with such CPUs.     Whether it is for voltage or CPU speed reasons (noting that the two generally go hand in hand), my advice is the same - avoid the 133MHz CPUs on a GX1 especially if going to buy one specially, as they either don't work, or only work at 2/3rds their rated speed!  YMMV.  As the OP already has the CPU, you are correct to suggest he tries it with bios A07.
