Optiplex GX270 boot up error: "Boot failed at checkpoint Ithr"

Computer worked perfectly until about two days ago - now I get this message when it turn it on. Sometimes Windows XP will start, but right as the logo appears, the system will quickly shut down. The power light on the front of the case stays on, but nothing appears on screen. I have tried rebooting a bunch of times, which did not help. In researching, someone said to remove the lithium battery, then plug it back in, but this also did not help. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Power off and disconnect the PC from the wall.  Press/hold the power button on tower for ~15 sec. Open the case and remove the battery from the motherboard.  Press/hold the power button for ~30 sec.

Reinstall the battery, right-side up. If it's more than ~3 yrs old, it's probably a good idea to install a fresh one.  Close the case and power up. You should be good to go.

NOTE: Removing the battery from the motherboard will reset BIOS to the factory defaults. So you might get an error message about a failed floppy drive, if you don't have one installed in this system. In that case, run BIOS setup and disable the floppy drive controller. Save the change and exit setup.
