Optiplex GX520 Processor Upgrade
Hi folks,
I have an Optiplex GX520 with a Celeron D 2.53 GHz, and I am getting tired of its sluggish performance. I am looking to upgrade the processor. Information on what that motherboard will support seems to vary, so that is why I am coming here for answers. The cooling is a major issue since it is a SFF. Any suggestions or information on this topic will be appreciated!

The Optiplex GX520 does not support any Core 2 Duo processors.
The fastest processor that's supported is the Pentium D 2.8Ghz.
More GX520 processor upgrade info, can be found here:

Prior to installing the processor, check that the BIOS are updated, to the latest version.

Did the computers that shipped with the Pentium D 2.8GHz have any diffrent cooling than mine, or won't I have to upgrade it?

The GX520 is a relatively old model. Installation of a SSD and maximising your RAM to 4 GB will give you more of a performance boost than a processor upgrade: http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/Dell-memory/OptiPlex/OptiPlex+GX520-upgrades.html it is also harder to upgrade the video on this model.
In addition if it is running Windows XP then upgrading to Windows 7 will also help however the cost of a SSD and a Windows 7 license is not worth it for this model and you may want to consider looking for a second hand OptiPlex 760 which has a Windows 7 license included which many businesses are selling as they perform their next hardware upgrade cycle.

The 520 is a lobotomized 620.
The 520 has 2 ram slots the 620 has 4
The 520 has no PCI-E X16 video slot the 620 has 1 X1 and 1 X16 slot.
The Tower Model is the most upgradeable.
