Parallel port continually INITs in Win-XP

I have just attached a ~10 y old Panasonic KXP1124 printer to LPT1.  The printer works perfectly on my ~4 y old W98 machine, but on my new XP machine it continually resets (power & on-line lights blink, and head parks).  Parallel Port Montior (freeware) shows that it is cycling pin16 (INIT) about every 2 seconds.  My configuration is:

  • Dimension 4600 with BIOS version A06 (also happened with A03).
  • Win-XP home version 5.1 SP1
  • LPT1 set to EPP in BIOS, but listed as ECP by Device Manager.  Running with MS driver 5.1.2600.0
  • Using the KXP1124 driver that came with XP.

As a novice, this looks to me as if it has nothing to do with the printer ... it is a port problem.  Cycling begins just after the login screen appears (i.e., before the user logs in) and occurs even if I delete the printer.  I have tried pretty well all the Ports settings under Device Manager, all the LPT types in the BIOS, uninstalling LPT1 under Device Manager and then re-installing, and a Google search.  So far, no luck.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
