PCI Simple communications controller problem

I recently got a virus of sorts that I could not fix, so I ended up having to reformat my new Dell 8300. Since then all has been well except for a problem in the device manager - it shows a question mark with PCI Simple Communications controller, which I suspect is the modem. What should I do and where can I download the driver (I could not find the driver on my Dell CD, but I am not that computer savvy, so it may well be on the CD). I am also concerned that if I install the driver, there will be a knock-on effect to my ADSL modem, which is my primary (and only) connection to the internet.

The problem with the above is that yesterday, to my surprise, a "Found New Hardware" dialogue box popped up on my screen, which I presume is for the PCI Simple Comms controller, as I have not added any hardware except the dell printer (920) which is running fine. I also got a blue screen a short while after that which was very concerning .... something about "bugcode_usb_driver..... tech info: STOP:0x00000FE(0x000002) etc"

Many thanks for any assistance you can give

Greatful, concerned Dell fan

I am assuming that you have Windows XP installed.  After the reformat and installation of the OS did you also install the chipset driver?  If not, the chipset driver can be download here from the Dell File Library.  As for the modem, the link here is for the drivers to the various modems Dell may installed in your system.  Not knowing what brand of modem you have I am unable to point you to a specific driver.

Hi Majestic

Thank you very much for the reply. Yes, I am using windows XP, and no, I have no idea what a chipset driver is (I thought that I did well just being able to reformat the machine  .... as a rookie I have never heard of a chipset driver).

I shall try and install both and see what happens.

Kind regards

Basically the chipset driver allows the processor to effectively communicate with all the other installed hardware.

For future reference here is a Dell Knowledge Base article I ran across while helping another owner.  I thought maybe you would want to bookmark it as details the steps in re-installing the operating system on the 8300 model.  Here is the link:

Majestic, What is "you would want to bookmark " to quote you mean? Is this the same as putting a link in favorites?  Thanks Doogie
