PCI Universal Serial bus

I have a dimension 4500s that I am 'upgrading' from windows xp to windows 98. Everything works fine after I installed all drivers, including chipset But in device manager, I have PCI Universal Serial Bus with the exclamation through it, and I have looked everywhere for an update to no avail. Any suggestions?? I even did the Windows Update from the MS site.

Thanks in advance.

Shane

This might seem like silly question, but is it Windows 98 SE...as opposed to the non 'special edition'?

Yes, 98SE.

Thanks,

hmmm, that should have been taken care of by this:

which i believe you said you installed. the first thing i do is to get into the device manager and delete that device listing. reboot the computer and see if it comes up correctly this time. if not, i would try to load the above listed chipset drivers to see if it grabs the USB drivers.

windows 98 is soooo picky sometimes hehe. you have to do everything in the correct order and so forth, it is voodoo magic i tell you.

I had a similar problem, but the error I got read : "Universal Serial BuS (USB) controller"

I solved it (with some help from the people here in delltalk) installing support for USB 2.0 from my Dell Resource/Drivers CD. BTW, I am using XP Home on a Dimension 4500.

Hope this helps

Shane,
Mario is right on the money. You must install the USB 2.0 driver to remove that conflict from device manager. Unfortunately you're probably out of luck since you've installed Win 98SE. According to Intel, USB 2.0 drivers only exist for Windows XP and Windows 2000 (Win 2k drivers are currently beta). They say that for other Windows drivers (98, 98SE, ME), you will need to work with 3rd party vendors such as Orange Micro, Adaptec, etc. This would naturally imply you'd need to purchase a USB 2.0 PCI card in order to get driver support. In case you're wondering, I found this info here.

Thanks alot Mario and Ron!!

Are there any ramifications of leaving the config this way other that USB performance. I have installed a USB mouse, and it detected it and worked properly.

Thanks again in advance.

Hi,

If it's not broken, don't fix it.
