PCIE 2 is backwards compatible but our mobo does not support the PCIE 2 bandwidth. so yes it will only work at pcie 1 speed.

i just bought a diamond viper hd3850,,,its direct x 10.1,,,but i now wished i would have gotten the hd3870....quite a bit difference in performance...the hd3870 is not as fast as a 8800gtx,,bit its very fast...also, i,ve heard its better for blu-ray movies than the nvidia cards,,,thought i read that somewhere. if you put two hd3850s in crossfire,,,they are way faster than an 8800ultra, and for less than $400.

Not sure about an Ultra but they can outperform a GTX, except in EnemyTerritory.

I'm sure they will because the x38/48s and 780s all support pcie2. I really don't think it's necessary for our current generation of video cards and raid controllers but the ones coming within the next year will definitely benefit from the increased bandwidth. Additionally, there is a new 8 pin power connector for pcie 2.0 which means that if they drop the 6 pin (seems unlikely) we'll need a solution to that. Hopefully it's just an adapter but who knows? I'm just wondering if they will ever just bypass the north bridge and have a direct lane to the cpu, but then again I dont understand a whole lot about engineering to answer that question.
