Pentium vs Celeron... any pros/cons?

Question

Hypethetical scenereo, two computers let's say both Dimension 2400s. Completely identical in both hardware and software configuration, except one has a 2.20 Ghg Celeron processor, the other has a 2.20 Ghg Pentium4 processor. Would the one using a Pentium perform better than it's counterpart that uses a Celeron?

Intel has always differentiated between the two lines by having a smaller cache and/or bus speed in the Celeron line. Whether or not you can tell the difference running typical applications (as opposed to benchmark programs) is debatable.

If you aren't gaming or doing heavy PhotoShop editing, I doubt you would notice. I personally am a big Celeron fan (hae 2350 w/Cel 2.0 and Inspiron 1100 w/ Cel 2.0, had many Celerons in the past). For standard desktop apps you'd be hard pressed to tell any real difference without doing actual benchmarks.

The reason why I asked is because my current PC, a Dimension 2100 uses a Celeron processor. I am not much into heavy gaming, but I am a flight sim enthusiast. I run a copy of X-Plane and do use photoshop for X-Plane texture work a little. X-Plane runs fairly well on my system, with very few perfomance problems and I don't run into many problems with photoshop either. I am getting ready to start putting aside money for a Dimension 2400. I was just wondering if I should go with a Pentium4 or can still conscider a Celeron processor.

You would have more of a performance problem with the embedded graphics than any difference in processors.

I agree with Talmy, above. I love Celeron processors, and always push them for home use... there's just no real difference when you're sending an e-mail.

If you really want better performance n that flight sim, save the money you were going to drop on a new processor and get yourself a new graphics card... the biggest you can afford.

For what it's worth, a P4 w/ HT would probably significantly boost your PhotoShop performance, but I don't know that it would be worth it.

For my daughter's peace of mind, and mine, I need to see it stated that a Celeron processor with a speed greater than 1.66 GHz will operate satisfactorily with AOL 9.0.

To add to a recent post, simply click on it, pick Message Options, then Edit.

The processor has no impact on AOL's performance.
