pixel and vertex shader version

This is my first post here and I will start it off with a question.  When gaming how important is it that you have the latest pixel and vertex shader version?  I have a Dimension 4550  with a Radeon 9500 Pro (9700 128MB card and I am thinking about upgrading to a Radeon X800 which only supports version 2.0.  I was thinking about buying the GeForce 6600 but it appears to me that the X800 is a better cared except for the shaders.

Thanks,

I would tend to agree with you if you buy a X800 Series card with 256MB of GDDR3 memory.   The Vanilla (plain X800s) cards mostly have the slower, less MHz    DDR and DDR2 memory.  You would want something like a GTO, PRO, XL or XT Model.   Advantages over the 6600 would be 16 or 12 pipes over the 6600s 8 pipes and a 256 BIT memory interface over the 6600s 128 BIT.    As you said you would have Shader Model 2.0 vs the 6600s SM. 3.0 but since you never had it you more than likely would not miss it.     In my opinion it doesn't make or break gaming.     The 6600GT model with it's high clock speeds can come up close but can't really match the above listed cards in power or speed.
