Power to the computer?

I have a concern about using the Belkin power strip. When I turn off the unit I go through the normal procedure and the unit turns off. I then turn off the power strip which shuts off the sub woofer, printer and monitor. When I power up again (before turning on the computer) I can hear the unit make noise which leads me to believe even with the computer off something in the unit remains powered up. Am I damaging something by shutting off the power to the computer? Would I be better off to leave the power strip on and to manually shut off the monitor, printer and sub woofer?

Unlikely that you are damaging anything.  You need to go into BIOS setup (F2 at first boot screen); there you can set what you want the CPU to do when you power up; usually there are three choices: ON, OFF or, LAST STATE.  I suspect that you want yours set at ON.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. I guess what I'm saying is that even with the computer off, is there something that continues to use power like the hard drive?

A little word to the wise...most printers need to be turned off before cutting the power abruptly... you might have damaged it

well most computers don't use any power when they are off, but Dell's does. there is a small LED inside the case that stays lit at all times. Also the power supply makes the faintest hum, and i mean faint. mine began getting louder and louder until i had it replaced.

but the hard drive and cd drives dont use any power when they are off.

but cutting the power totally with a power strip will not hurt the computer.

Actually I only turn on the printer if I'm going to use it and turn it off before I shut the system down,  Back to the other issue I know the system has a battery. By leaving power connected to the unit does it save the battery? I could get a surge protector that has a few unswitched connections. I have a cable modem and have to keep it connected to the wall outlet since it needs to be connected at all times. I hope I'm not beating a dead horse with this issue.
