Power UP Hardware
I boot my computer every AM and I have many boxes to swith on. The 8250 computer, display, external drive, scanner, printer, DVD burner and now a high speed modem must be turned on. Are ther any sophisticared devices that will turn everything on at once. Like a voice activated power turn on device. Everything now goes to a surge supressor that is buried in the computer console rack.

To turn on a heavy load like that i'm not sure, but you can perchase power strips that surge protect aswell as monitor a single socket for a change in current consumption that then effectivley "turn on" the remaining sockets to power your extra periphrals. I've only seen 4-socket versions of this, one that has costant power that you would connect your pc to, and the remaning 3 that power up when the PC is turned on.
I live in the UK and this is the only place i have seen them, but they maybe in other countries too. It may be worth googleing a search for power strips that have this specific feature.

Perhaps this is obvious…
Set a power up time in your BIOS then use a USB port to control a USB switch connected to a power strip (to power peripherals). If surge is a concern stagger the BIOS start times.
