Powersupply Upgrade and Processor!
Hey guys,
just a quick question.
i own a Dell Inspiron 530 purchased (ory007) in 2007 and i am planning to upgrade my current PSU 300watt to something much higher and my processor to the E8400 Intel.
i am unware if UK Dell desktops might differ from USA Dells (Unsure), but i saw previous posts but still uncertain if they are applied for me aswell.
any information you need, please let me know!
i know dell does make its own PSU different so i wanted to be sure.

Assuming that your Inspiron 530 is the Mini Tower version and not the so-called Slimline.
The Inspiron 530 MT does not use a Dell proprietary power supply.
Most generic standard ATX power supply units can be installed, with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector, with or without the on/off switch. You should be able to buy a compatible power supply from either a local or online computer store. Note: A power supply with four SATA power connectors, is required.

Yes it is the Mini Tower.
ok i will need a 24 Pin PSU without the +4.
are you certain Bev, i honestly do not want to blow my PC up lol. even tho my father brought it over (Dell) the Phone in the UK?
with regards to upgrading my Processor would the E8400 work? 3ghz?

I have have a July 2007 Inspiron 530 Mini tower and know that the standard ATX power supply, as I have already noted, is compatible.
Regards to the P1 main motherboard power connector, you can use either a 24-pin, or a 20+4-pin connector, but you will find that most retail power supplies have the 20+4-pin connector.
The reason for this, the same power supply can be used on motherboards that have a 20-pin P1 main power connectors and the newer motherboards that have a 24-pin P1 connector.
The Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8400, 3.0GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0 will work fine in the 530.
Prior to installing the processor you need to check that you have BIOS Version 1.0.15, or higher, when support for new Intel CPU's was added.
Last year I installed an E8400 in the 530 MT and recently upgraded to Windows 7 without any issues.

Forgot to mention, before connecting the new power supply cord to the outlet, if the replacement power supply has *Red* voltage toggle selector, check that is set to correct voltage setting.

Hey Bev,
sorry to be a pain,
as i will be upgrading my Processor and PSU, i also thought about it and i would like to upgrade my Graphics card from Ati HD 5670 (Similar to 4670) to something better.
i was looking at the Ati HD 5870 and it measures 28cm long (JESUS), i don't think it would fit.
but do you know a good GPU preferable AMD-ATI card that would fit,
im more of a ATI fanboy then Nvidia.

The ATI Radeon HD 5870 should fit into the Inspiron 530 Mini Tower case, with no 2nd hard drive installed, plus you will loose the use of the PCIe x1 slot.
A 500w or greater power supply with two 75w 6-pin PCIe power connectors is required, see HERE
I recently installed an ATI Radeon HD 6970 in my Mid-tower desktop and it's a *monster* of a graphics cards
