Precision 370 high pitched 'whirring' - processor dependent

Hi, I recently purchased a precision 370 with a P4 3Ghz processor. It works great other than a high pitched whirring that is driving me and my family crazy. I have pinpointed the problem to the cpu fan assembly. If I open the case, the sound goes away. If the processing picks up, the sound goes away. So I removed a few PCI slot covers to allow more airflow - that works for the first 15 minutes after boot up - then back to the sound.   Is there a way to manually change the speed of the fan? Could this be the solution or is there something else I should be looking into? Any help would be great. Thanks.

You can't manually set the fan speed for the CPU fan.  It is directly controlled by the CPU temperature, I believe.  You might want to make sure nothing is interfering with the fan blades when the case is closed....otherwise sounds like you have a bum fan.  :smileysad:
