Precision 380 + Core 2 Duo CPU
Greetings
I own a Precision 380 workstation and I currently have a Pentium IV 630 (3.0GHz with HT, 800 MHz FSB), and I got from a friend a Core 2 Duo CPU (2.13 GHz, 1066 MHz).
According to Intel, the 955 chipset supports some of the Core 2 Duo CPUs. Will this processor run in my system?

Almost certainly not - unless you can determine that Dell shipped those CPUs, chances are the mainboard/voltage regulators/BIOS won't support them.

As stated by ejn63, that processor is not supported. The 380 came with:
Intel® Pentium® 4 (single core) (with Hyper-Threading technology)
Intel Pentium D (dual core) (no Hyper-Threading)
Intel Pentium processor Extreme Edition (dual core) (with Hyper-Threading)
Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition (with Hyper-Threading)

I am also interested in buying a new processor for my Precision 380. Since Core 2 processors are not compatible with the original motherboard, I looked for alternatives and saw Pentium Dual Core E2220. Would anyone know if this works with the 380?

The VRM doesn't support anything beyond the 6x0 CPUs AFAIK.
So don't bother.

OK- thanks for the info. I'll put the upgrade on hold for now and change the entire motherboard later.

to whom it may now concern , PentiumD's work quite well - and seem more optimized for web browsing with better quality graphics than the single core HT P4 (check your BIOS setup to ensure HT enabled if still using the P4) ) however if you want to wake up this model system I suggest take advantage of onboard SATA raid array striping and add another same spec hard disk drive

I've just rigged my Precision 380 with a Pentium D 3.00Ghz. It runs slightly better than the HT P4 3.6Ggz that came in the machine, but on the other side, I couldn't help but notice the instant increase in temperature, due to the cooling fan almost instantaneously attempting to turn into a jet engine at the slightest thought of opening a program. This has since been resolved with a couple of extra case fans, one on the front of the heat sink itself, secondly, another at the rear to suck everything through!
Happy upgrading people!
