Precision 530 - Maximum processor?
What is the maximum supported XEON CPU speed of the Precision 530 Workstation? Mine is slightly older (1 1/2 years), and is currently running a 1.7GHz XEON 400MHz FSB.
Thanks,
Dave Green

Hey dsgreen30-
you may be stuck at a 1.7GHz-2.0GHz Foster core chips. Check out the thread I started about this subject.

You may be very unpleasantly surprised.

I was just wondering this same thing myself.
I too have a Precision workstation 530. I purchsed it the end of may 2002. While investigating the internals of the machine I found out I have the 3N384 motherboard. However, I have been reading conflicting reports about which motherboards support which processors.
So... Does anyone have a clue what processors I can upgrade to? RIght now I have the 1.7's installed. They came with the machine.
Some other stuff:
I ran the delldiag test and it said that my voltage was 1.7 and that I could only go to 2.4 speed processors. I believe this is do the the vrm correct?
So I called sales and they told me that I could upgrade to a set of 2.8's (at a very steep price) or 2.6's or 2.4's. So I asked the woman in sales if she could transfer me to tech support so that I could figure out if I was purchsing the right upgrade. She then transfered me to India I believe (this was after hours, I believe I read thats where you are sent if you call then) where I could barely understand the tech support guy (due to line noise, not accent). I explained that I had a simple question about a processor upgrade, so as not to take up the valuable time of the tech support guys. I was hoping that since I had such a simple question it would go quicker if I explained upfront. He put me on hold several times, and About a half hour later the guy came back with the answer. Dell does not suggest upgrading the processors in your system, your system was desinged with specific hardware in mind. Also, upgrading the processors in this machine will void the warranty. So I said ok thinking that it was a disclaimer of sorts and asked him for the numbers. After about a min of ping-ponging back and forth with "I'm sorry what was that", and "what did you say" and " can't understand what you're saing" It ended up that he didn't even get numbers for me. He said he could get them if I could wait. I replyed with a nevermind this is ridiculous and proceeded to hang up.
Could someone please help me out here. All I want is the speed of the processors my machine can upgrade to. Also I need to know what other items if any I may need. I need to change the voltage to the processors right? Are the heatsinks different? I should be looking for the 400 bus speed processors not the 533 ones right? And what pin configuration 603 or 604? Thermall jelly?
Thanks in advance.
Also does anyone know what brand ram is installed in the 530?

If you want Prestonia CPUs, you need to upgrade your motherboard to 3N384:
