PRECISION: System Battery Charge Low Warning on Boot Up

On researching this warning I appear to need to replace the system battery that stores system information such as time and date. Can anybody advise me what type of battery I need, where to source and how to best replace.

Going to be very hard to help unless you post your system information such as what computer you have. But it is rather easy to replace a battery for a desktop. It is a larger button battery that has the number on it that you can take to Walmart even and they can sell you one and usually for around a couple bucks. But post what model desktop you have and one can look online or in your users manual for the type and how to replace the battery.

I'll post up specifics when I get back to the office. I was slightly worried about removing the battery for a period of time. Is there any risk associated with this. It could take a couple of days to source anew battery. Sounds like they are pretty standard camera/watch battery - am I right?

Assuming its ok to take the old battery out? Is it easy to reset the time - is there a risk of loosing any data?

You won't lose any data like from the HD. You can take the cover off the system and read the battery number without removing it. Seems like most computers use the 2032 battery. I could look but seems like that is the correct number. Yes, some MB will have the battery in a place that one might have to say remove the video card. But it is easy. All you need to do is protect against static electricity. I have found that resting the arm/elbow on the metal case while replacing inside works well for that. Very similar to replacing a watch battery. But that is a little release spring type tab there you have to push and the battery will pop-up. You may reset the bios settings and have to run setup but usually most people use the default settings. I have seen times it never changed the time if you pull it and put another one in right then. Just not a big deal really. You can set the time in the bios setup or do it when windows starts and either way is simple. I would get the number off the battery and just go get a new one before changing it out. Walmart or Radio Shack can match the number real easy. Walmart is cheaper.

Thanks for the detaled advice. Just on case its relevant the amchine is actually a Dell Dimension 8300 not a Precision. What a terrible memory I have. Still it looks pretty simple. Cheers.

JMA Williams,

I do not see the battery (75481 Battery, Miniature, 3V, 190MAH, COIN, Lithium) on the Spare Parts website. Go here to purchase one.
