Precision T3500 doesn't recognize new HDD
I have a new 4TB Seagate hard drive that I am attempted in install as the third HDD on my Dell Precision T3500 system. The BIOS detects the drive just fine, but nothing within the OS (Windows 7 64-bit) finds it-- not Disk Management, Device Manager or any of Seagate's diagnostic tools.
Seagate's support said the only thing it could be is that my Rapid Storage Chipset driver needs to be updated. This is a little out of my depth. I have tried searching for an updated driver through Device Manager, but it says that my driver is up to date, though the date on it is 2010. I downloaded these files:
INTEL_RAPID-STORAGE-TECHNOLO_A07_R291721.EXE
SATA_DRVR_WIN_R264763.EXE
from the Dell driver website, but am unclear what to do with them.

SATA Operation has to be AHCI and INTEL RST must be 10.1 or higher. OS must be 64 Bit version You may also need a Host Bus Adapter Like the Rocket 600 series. This is what western Digital uses to address these issues. ACHI HBA is Required. The Rocket 620 HBA is one solution.

Intel RST replaces Intel Matrix Storage Manager. HOWEVER you cannot update to your hearts content from 7 to 8 to 9 to 10 to 11 to 12 to 13 etc. As the drivers and chipsets get newer the older ICH5 6 7 8 9 etc are dropped from support.

Version 9.6.0.1014 may be the max for your motherboard
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2682&CC_0104= "Intel(R) ESB2 SATA RAID"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27C3&CC_0104= "Intel(R) ICH7R/DH SATA RAID"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27C6&CC_0104= "Intel(R) ICH7MDH SATA RAID Controller"

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_282A&CC_0104= "Intel(R) ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E/5 Series SATA RAID"
Lowest version that supports larger than 2TB is RST Version 10.1.0.1008
downloadcenter.intel.com/.../20768
In general INTEL RST Version 10,11,12,13 ICH8
IMSM = Earlier Version of the Driver.
IMSM is NOT EQUAL to INTEL RST
Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) version 9.6 and newer supports 4k sector disks if the device supports 512 byte emulation (512e). Intel® RST does not support 4k native sector size devices.
What happens if I try to use an older version of the driver?
If you try to install the operating system on a 512e disk with a driver older than Intel® RST version 9.6, the install process might not complete. This driver is not validated with your XPS and may not work at all. There will be ZERO support for this if its not working. INSTALLING THIS DRIVER if its not working can lead to 100 percent loss of all data. Do so at your own RISK. Installing a version Higher than the supported chipset does the same thing. All Raid Data lost restart from zero.

If the operating system does install, do not try to upgrade to Intel® RST version 9.6 without reinstalling your operating system.
As the versions go up the support for earlier ICH Goes Down aka not supported.

64 Bit OS is required for drives larger than 2TB
INTEL RST Greater than version 10.1 is required for drives Larger than 2TB
http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/218615en
Like other kinds of software, the Intel RST drivers are updated to keep pace with new technology. The Intel drivers found in retail releases of Windows 7 have a 2.2TB limitation. Rather than cut off the capacity at 2.2TB, the limitation expresses itself as the remainder above 2.2TB. In other words, the driver causes the Windows operating to see a 3TB drive as 746.52 GiB (or 800GB).
With 32 bit OS Both the partition length and partition start address are stored as 32-bit quantities.
Because the block size is 512 bytes, this implies that neither the maximum size of a partition
nor the maximum start address (both in bytes) can exceed 2^32 × 512 bytes, or 2 TiB
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg463525.aspx
The GUID Partition Table (GPT) was introduced as part of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) initiative. The maximum partition (and disk) size is a function of the operating system version. Windows XP and the original release of Windows Server 2003 have a limit of 2TB per physical disk, including all partitions. For Windows Server 2003 SP1, Windows XP x64 edition, and later versions, the maximum raw partition of 18 exabytes can be supported. (Windows file systems currently are limited to 256 terabytes each.)
