Problem: ADA885 speakers flash on/off
Hello all,
I need some help with my dads Altec Lansing ADA885 speakers. I have searched the boards and haven't been able to find anything on this specific problem. Here's what it's doing: The display on the right/front speaker flashes "StereoX2" on and off constantly, so fast that its hard to even see what it is saying. None of the buttons or controls function, and the speakers produce no sound. We have tried unplugging the set, unplugging individual speakers, messing with the diagnostic button, but have not had any luck. The set is plugged in through a surge protector so I don't believe it has seen any surges. I'm at my wit's end here guys, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Try the diagnostic steps below to see if they pass. If not, contact Dell Support and have them replaced.
Running the speaker diagnostics will reset the speakers to factory defaults. Diagnostics can be run from a button on the sub-woofer. A test tone will sequence to each speaker separately. A 1k Hz tone is used for the satellite speakers and a 50Hz tone is used for the subwoofer. After the test is completed the speakers will be set to Dolby Digital mode, regardless of how they had been set before.
The speakers can also be reset to factory defaults by pressing the BASS and TREBLE buttons at the same time for about 4 seconds, or until the LCD display shows DOLBY DIGITAL. Volume will also be reset.
To balance the sound system in the Dolby Digital and Prologic modes a noise test is provided. To put the system in the NOISE mode, hold down the MODE button until the LCD display shows NOISE.
The noise test (static) will hit each speaker in approximately 2-second steps. Use the master volume control to balance the sound between channels. When the volume level is adjusted on a particular speaker, the noise test will remain on that speaker until the adjustment is finished. The sequence will resume when no further adjustments are made.

I have a similar problem on mine.
I have 8 light grey boxes on the display. No matter what I do with the speakers they won’t turn on. Reset, unplug them for a day. Test tone works, but nothing gives normal sounds out of the speakers.
This happened a day after I installed a florescent bulb in my office. I have had the speakers react and sometimes do undesired operations with florescent light source before in my old apartment. I’m guessing that they could have gone to some programming mode?
