Problem with shuting down

I only had the computer for not even a month and I am have been having problems with it shutting down. It freezes and I have to turn it off by the surge protector. It does it often. I also have a problem with it freezing during a program and it is not just one it is a few. And they are different ones not the same ones over and over again.

two known problems that cause shut down hangs

AOL and windowsME are not compatible
Bios version is not AO4

check both of these, the way that i normally check the bios version is very simple to me, when you first push the power button on your computer to turn it on, right when you see any text at all, press the pause/break button on your keyboard, if you dont see anything stating the version, press enter and then pause/break again. This just pauses the system so you can read the text on the screen.

how come they load AOL? Well, that is unsure but if i had to make a guess, i would guess that the computers that preload all the software on to these, are set up to load aol too. And, stopping those machines from loading it onto these machines would be a hassle. And I guess no one thought of it or something.

LOL, I know...probably WAY off from the truth, but hey, I gave it a shot at what I THOUGHT it was.
