processor fan recall -- 8250

Last week I received a phone message from Dell telling me that they want to swap-out the processor fan in my dimension 8250 which is about 10 months old.  They said that mine was in a group that had defective fans.  I called them and they told me that they'd either send a tech out to replace the fan or that they'd send me the new fan and I could replace it myself.  I opted to replace it myself.  So I'm assuming it is being shipped as we speak.

My question is:  I've been reading about but can't quite understand the difference between the datech and the NMB fan?  Can somebody fill me in on this?  I know mine has the datech fan.  Will I be getting the NMB fan from Dell?  Is the NMB fan have a greater capacity for cooling?

Has anybody else been called by Dell to have the fan replaced?  I think it's great that they'd call and let me know that there is a recall  ...in fact, I can't believe that they'd actually call like that.  I'd assume that they'd just let the consumer find out for themselves that a recall exists and then they'd have to call Dell to arrange the recall.  I'm impressed!

I had actually read in this forum or some other of a couple of people who had been called also.

Thanx 'Rambo.  I just did a quick search and found another thread where you were participating and posted on it.   Didn't find any comments about the recall but hopefully somebody will respond.  Appreciate your response.

'Rambo--  Holy smokes!!  ...after searching further, I see that there are dozens of threads pertaining to 8250 processor fans since the beginning of the year.  When I have the time, I'll have to sit down and read through them all.

I too recieved a phone call from Dell about a month ago about my 8250 fan. I have called them back at least 6 times because they keep saying someone will contact me within 48 hours, but they keep giving the run around when I call back after 3 or 4 days. I live in Canada and evidently the CSR says they are delayed in replacing the fans in Canada. I guess they're waiting till my system toasts and then they have to replace the whole system.

So how noisy is your fan right now, Steve?

Let me know if I can give you the number I called.  They took my order quickly with a minimum of questions and I recieved the fan within 3 days.  It'll probably take longer to get to Canada but I can't believe it would be that much longer.  And why would they  be delaying shipment to Canada only?  The fan I received was another Datech but the Datech I received before this one, which is currently in my box, is whisper quiet.

*heh* and believe it or not, there's a sensor that will detect the temperature and shut your system down before any damage can be done.  Well, that's if everything is working properly.  My original fan, after squeaking loudly for months, finally came to a dead stop one day.  The system immediately shut itself down.

So, dell deleted it. OK, trying again with some words removed. Karell, if you delete it can you please at least explain why you think it contains profanity(thru private messaging, I would accept the ban happily after that. please mention the specific words). I know you can ban me after this but how's that going to help anybody.
-----------------------------------------
this reply got deleted from this thread. either Dell deleted it or some error with their server, I assume it was the latter.
-----------------------------------------
lot of people have been creating a lot of noise about
this really NOISY 8250 fan, including myself. Its
funny that the people who created the noise are not
the ones who got the notice.

This thread was locked after Dell realised that too
many people were using unmentionable words there. Please visit and see for yourself.

Dell, if you are reading: My cpu fan was replaced
twice (datech with datech) and on two other occassions
you said you are sending me the NMB fan and the guy
ended up with Datech again and was promptly sent back.
The matter was closed with the DELL giving up with "We
don't have NMB fans anymore". And my m/c is really noisy
(even when not doing anything, forget about when
its actually doing some work) and I wish I HADN'T
BOUGHT IT!!

Yeah, I read through that thread and several others recently.  So they locked that thread you mentioned?  I see they locked it quite awhile ago.  I'm wondering what happened to all those people and how their fan problem was resolved.  You don't think any of them received the "recall" phone call because of their participation on this message board?  I'd think Dell would want to replace all 8250 fans no matter what.  What happened to all those people who were posting on that thread?

Like I've said, I'm thinking that the problem has been corrected by Datech and Dell.  The Datech I've received is whisper quiet with the exception of when the ambient temperature rises, it will "pulsate" slightly but not excessively.

if problem has been corrected, then why no call so far?

some people just learn to live with it while others don't. I don't know about others on that thread but I would keep sending emails and keep posting because I spent 2500$ of my hard earned money on this m/c and I want full value for it.

help_appreciated,

It is possible that your particular system has been overlooked in the effort to repair this fan problem. If it says that you have already had the fan replaced then you may have been excluded from the call list as already repaired. Call Dell and see if you can get the fan replaced again.

This is my first time on a forum of any type, so please excuse any errors.

Have I got a story for the Dell community forum.

I have a Dimension 8250.  About 2 months ago I received a voice mail on my home phone  from "Dell" saying that there was a problem with some fans on my model of the Dimension 8250.  They offered to replace the fan.  When I called back (it was an 866 area code), I was unable to complete the call.  A computer-generated message said something to the effect that the "call could not be placed from my location."

Since I wanted to have the fan replaced, I called Dell technical support.  After describing what had happened (phone number not working, person leaving original voice identifying himself by name and agent number), I was told that the call must be a crank call.  I asked to speak to a supervisor.  After checking my "computer records" at Dell, he said that there was no fan recall and confirmed that it must be a crank call.  When asked how someone would have my service tag number, he said that it must be a disgruntled former Dell employee who "stole some records and knows the inherent weaknesses in the Dell system (i.e., fan problems in 8250's).

I bought this explanation, although I was very disappointed in Dell.

In the recent two weeks, I have received 3 or 4 calls and an e-mail from "Dell retrofit" offering to replace the fan.  When I ask for proof that they were really from Dell I was given an e-mail address that I could contact to verify the authenticity of the recall.  When I e-mailed that person at Dell I received any error message saying there was no one by that name at that address.

So I contacted Dell consumer service and technical support several times to explain the problem.  Every contact was unsatisfactory.  In each case I either could not get an answer or could not get a satisfactory answer.

One person at Dell (technical support) said that it wasn't real for the following reasons: (1) he couldn't verify recall by looking at Dell records; (2) e-mail address I was given was wrong; (3) person calling gave me his name and agent number which "no real Dell person would do"; and (4) he could not find person listed in Dell directory.

Then I get another call from a local IT person saying my Dell fan is in and he wants to come out to my house to replace it (will only take 5 minutes).  I don't want to let him do it until I know that Dell has really authorized this replacement.

HELP!!!!

jlsjlk,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

This is a service set up by Dell. The person contacting you would be a representative of Dell but not employed directly by Dell. The service would be handled by a Dell outsource group so the name would not be listed in the Dell directory.

Please have the service done. If you have any further questions on concerns about this service please feel free to private message me.

help_appreciated and LittleAdvice--

Even though I've had my fan replaced several times before the "recall," I still received the "recall" phone call.  So that might not be the reason.  It's really curious how Dell is going about it.  Maybe it's in batches.  It could be that they're doing the recall in the order in which the 8250s were purchased  ...I don't know.  I've got to believe that they know the time frame in which the bad fans were installed on new machines.  If not, then they would have to be doing a general recall of all 8250 fans (or whatever other models were affected).

Anyway, like I've said, I'm generally satisfied with the particular fan that's in my box right now.  It's still a Datech but it's generall whisper quiet.

Crosspost:

jlsjlk--

Yes, it's definitely an official "recall" as I can attest to.  Like I've said, I received the call and received my new fan.  It's my third one on this machine.  My second one is working fine and quietly.  It's a Datech as well as the one I received on the "recall."

If anyone else reading this thread needs the toll-free, "866" number that was given to me through the recall, let me know and I'll furnish you with it.  When I called this "866" number, I received prompt and courteous service.  The rep took a minimum amount of information and sent the new fan out immediately as I received it within 3 days.

I guess there still are some unhappy 8250 owners out there with a noisy fan but I'm really pleased with my Datech fan so far!  It's quiet and efficient and much better than the original fans that were installed in these machines.
