How can I tell how hot my processor is? It seems sometimes my fan is running very loud when running multiple applications. Sometimes it sounds like it is not running at all.
my system is a Dimension 4600. 2 hard drives, 1 gig ram. 2.8 p4 nvidia 128 agp card. With it reving up and down sounds like it my be the video card fan.
Are we talking about the cpu fan or the Video card fan ? What system do you have ? After market probe can be purchased for the cpu since Dells motherboards do not have this tool. If its the video card fan, than this is normal in cooling the video card such as in playing games. Speeds up, and down.
Many newer drivers have a control panel, which also shows the video card temp, if the card has this function. Some older cards do not, and some do. You did not list the model of the video card. But I would not worry too much, since my card fan does the same thing depending on if I'm gaming or the temp in my home is too high. Make sure your system is not in a tight space. You need air to circulate around the case to keep it cooler.
I use a Dell Optiplex at work (3 GHz P4, 1G ram, onboard video) and usually the cooling fan is below audibility, but if I'm working on a large image file, doing some fiddly stuff with selections and layers the cooling fan will speed up for a few moments then quiet down again. That's pretty normal...
