rdram and ddr ram

Question

all right i have a 8100 series with 128 mb rdram. It is in two modules of 64 each. I was going to buy two more 128's but i just saw how much the rdram costs. I was wondering if instead i could take out the 128 rdram and put ddr ram in it. I didn't know if that was possible to do on my computer or not. I hope it is but im afraid that might not work. anyhelp welcome

bxtr is correct. Your motherboard only supports RDRAM and there is no way you can put DDRRAM in without changing the motherboard. Note also that memory on this system must be added in matched pairs i.e. if you want to add 256 Mb, you have to install 2 - 128 Mb chips.

I dont think you can do this.

Your RAM Slots are working with RD Technology and (i think) the Chipset on your motherboard is related to this.

But I'm not 100% sure about this.
You should wait with crying until someone else replied to your thread.

why do u have to do it in pairs?? i have a 256mb stick and 64mb stick in mine lol. the system reconizes 320mb total.

RDRAM only has to be installed in pairs on a Pentium 4 system.  If you have a Pentium 3 system, like XPS-B series computers, then it does not have to be added in pairs. Steve

RDRAM must  be installed in pairs. SDRAM and DDR does not.  It is impossible to install the wrong type of RAM on your board (except for the wrong speed), because RDRAM, SDRAM and DDR all have different shaped slots & notches.  So no, you cannot switch which types of RAM your Dell uses.  Some aftermarket boards do support the use of two different types, but they cannot be used at the same time. You can mix sizes, but both slots have to be occupied. P-4 motherboards using 1 stick of RDRAM have a continuity module in the empty slot.

Just bought (online) two (2) 128's Rdram's for $31.00 each plus $7.00 S&H for this 8200 Dell. Received them in 2 days and now installed.

eBay is where I purchased mine.

This 8200 uses nonECC; however, not sure if all Dell models uses nonECC.

Need to check the configuration/documentation specs on your 8100----it should give you the specs on your memory modules.
