If you use a screen saver turn that off too then try again. If that doesn't work you could try it in Safe Mode.

I'm running the Cox cable modem, and always stop incoming signals before running Scan Disk. It's surprising how much comes from the modem to the computer when you are not using the Internet. I used to unplug the power cable from the modem, and then started using a separate power strip. If you are using a router to connect a second computer, it's even easier. Just unplug the router. You don't need to wait while the modem re-establishes contact when you are finished.

If the above helps and you are using a firewall like Zone Alarm, try locking it so no incoming signals can get through. Just remember to unlock when you are finished, or you will think your server is down.

Bob, I ended task on everything but something called Tsystray, (?) , systray, and explorer and ran scan disk for 10 hours , after answering no to showing me every time it restarted 10 times, finally gave up after 10 hours. Could you tell me how to run in safe mode--never tried that, is there a chance I can crash the puter? LOL

Thanks to all that answered! After several attempts, I finally was able to ScanDisk by disabling McAfee VShield, Automatic Virus schedules & updates, screensaver, power saver and Zonealarm. Also had to disconnect the internet cable.

Thanks for the support & ideas.
