Screen expanding - overheating?

[EDIT: It is the monitor. I left the computer running but turned off the monitor, and when I turned it back on the problem was temporarily gone. I guess it's time to start saving for an LCD...]

My peculiar problem is that after the computer has been running a few hours, the display becomes sensitive to dark colors. A website with a black background will make the display 'expand' so that content on the edges falls off the sides of the monitor screen. When I switch back to a white background it goes normal again. If I let this go on for hours and get worse, eventually the whole display gets a reddish tint.

I know this is obviously an overheating problem but of which component? I've only had the Dell E521 since December, but my previous computer had the same problem too. The only holdover from that system is my monitor (Viewsonic PF790 - a flat CRT) but it doesn't seem particularly warm. Any ideas?

Hi
You said the old computer had the same problem with the old monitor
and the new computer has the same problem.
It seems to me that the monitor is got to be the problem.
It sounds like it is time to buy a new one.
Just my idea :smileyindifferent:
Edit -can you try a different monitor to see if it will work
