Should This Be Updated?-Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility?
Looking at updates, I have a Dell Dimension 8400. Looking at updates on Dells site. This was listed as an update:Chip Set:
Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility, Driver, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Multi Language, Dimension 8400, XPS Gen 3, XPS Gen 4, v.6.2.1.1001, A10
Should I be updating this? If so is there a proper way of installing? Thanks.
Anything I should be updating with this? Noticed on Pentiums webste stuff like this to install. Help appreciated, thanks.

Dell strongly recommends it to improve reliability. The installation instructions are on the download page here.

popeye1234.
The Chipset driver, is normally the first one to be installed after the installation of XP.

You are updating a driver which is already installed, so there should not be a problem. If you were doing a reinstall of the operating system it should go first.

PC World Mag and another mag. that I cannot remember at this time, states to do the following in this order when you reinstall windows...
1. Reformat and Re-install windows
2. Install SP-2 unless its already on your installation disk and make sure the firewall is activated
3. Install ChipSet Driver
4. Install the video card driver
5. Install Windows Critical Updates
6. Install everything else

For what it's worth, I did the update on my 8400 XPpro SP2 system and haven't seen any problems as a direct result.

No obvious changes/benefits. But have no idea what the update did so it's hard to know what to look for. No increased number of system crashes or freezes since the install.
If I'd been smart, I'd have copied down chipset info reported by Lavalys Everest before doing the update so I could compare it with the report afterwards. But you can do that and report back to the forum!
