Slow when logging off and on

Can someone please tell why it takes so long to log off and on my computer. I have a Dimension 8400. I've been running spyware daily but the same things happen, especially logging off. The screen takes about 2 minutes to log off. I never had this problem before until recently. It even takes about a minute to load when I log on. Could there be to many processes running, and if so which ones do I stop from running?

it isn't just spyware that causes it. also depends on what usb devices you have, what programs need closing. and also to save user settings and data.. i've had mine take 2mins before and i have no spyware/virus

I would blame spyware - I doubt this is a problem specific to the fact it's a Dell. I recommend getting a program called "HijackThis" (it's free). It will generate a list of all of the programs running on your computer. Then you can go to a website (I belive it's hijackthis.de) that will analyze your log and notify you if there's a problem.

Dell also has a HijackThis forum that may be useful to you: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board?board.id=si_hijack

Good - go to www.hijackthis.de and run your log file through it. Apparently it sees two "Nasty"s, the AOL toolbar. It'd be a good idea to get rid of those. However I doubt this would slow down your computer this much.

It's probably worth a shot to go through and run a virus scan (make sure to update your definitions, first), too.

Also, how much disk space do you have free? If it's less than a few GB, that will slow down your computer. (You can tell by clicking "My Computer" and looking at "Free Space" for your main drive (probably drive C))

Also, it might help to defragment your hard drive. That's a routine maintence process that should be done roughly every 3 - 6 months, depending on your computer usage (though I rarley remember to do it that often). It simply goes through and optimizes what free space you have left.

You can do that by going to start > accessories > system tools > disk defragmenter, and following the instructions. It'll take several hours to finish, so you might want to start it just before you go to bed or something.

I ran disk defrag and got rid of AOL toolbar.  Thanks for help, much appreciated. I almost have 1 GB of free space.

Ok, good. Is your computer still slow?

Yes it is still slow, always seems like it's loading all the time.

do you only have 1 gb of free space left? that will be the problem as defragging can't make new space it will just combind all the empty space into one block if its set to do that

Your mere 1GB of free space sure isn't helping the problem, but I seriously doubt it's the cause.

Have you run a virus scan latley?

Howdy
My long bootup & shutdown times were related to that buggy bloatware Nortons.
As soon as I changed to Zonealarm Security suite,  my bootup & shutdown times were reduced  markedly.
I got rid of Nortons because of conflicts with other programs, the better boot times were a bonus.
