Question

I recently restored my Dimension 4100 with windows 98SE. Ever since, I seem to be having lots of weird things happen to me. I downloaded and installed the proper drivers for the sound card, but no sound ever comes out. The only program that has any sound is the windows cd player (not media player, just plain ol' cd player). But, when it's playing and turned all the way up, you can barely hear anything, as for all other audio programs, they don't work. They'll play music w/o error, but nothing comes out.

I have checked the devices that each program uses, and each program is using my sound card at the output device, and my sound card worked fine before, just not since i installed 98SE. Any Suggestions?

Did you install the chipset driver after re-installing the operating system?  If not, then try installing the chipset driver and then re-install your sound drivers again.  You may have to also re-install the drivers for any of the other devices you are having a problem with.      The latest chipset driver for your model and Windows 98 can be found at this link here.

Well, that took care of all my other problems except the no sound. I installed the new chipset drivers and then reinstalled all my other drivers, including sound card drivers. When i double click the volume adjustment, it shows there's sound supposedly coming out, but there really isn't. I know the speakers are good, and i have already rechecked to make sure wmp is using the right output device. I have no idea what could be causing this problem.

Now that the chipset drivers are installed I would try uninstalling the sound card and reinstalling it.  Possibly when Windows is rebooted and it detects the card as new hardware it will correct any installation problem that is preventing the audio.

I went ahead and did a full system restore, and installed the chipset drivers before anything else, except the card is doing the same thing. I've double checked wmp and made sure it's using the right device, i've also double checked the drivers for the card, and they're the right ones. If it's going to be this much trouble, I can just live without sound. And the card still works, only under windows cd player, no other music program puts out any sound, although it shows it plays just fine.

Unfortunately I am all out of suggestions.  Since the sound card will work under some applications it would appear to me to be a software issue.  I would try posting your problem in the Software - Windows 95/98/ME forum to see if anyone else has any additional suggestions from a software perspective.
