sound problem dimension 8400

hello, i am trying to connect my pc to my stereo reciever via mini plug splitter to rca jacks to reciever. am getting some sound, but a lot of static, low volume and no control of volume when plugged into desktop speaker plug in. i have no rca jacks on sound card. is this the proper way to connect, or is there a better way? thanks, andy
