start-up error
Today I turned on my computer, and the Dell screen (the one with the little green thingy that goes across) took FOREVER to load. Then it happened again, but this time, it restarted while still on the Dell screen and went back to the Dell screen, and an error came up. I had to choose to start windows normally, revert back to the last working something, or go to safe mode. After this happened once or twice, it stopped working completely, and wouldn't let me go to my normal XP screen, instead I had to use Safe Mode and tried to fix it myself from the trouble-shooter (I did all the msconfig thing, to no avail). Finally, I got fed up with it, and set the config thing back to normal and restarted one last time. This time the Dell screen again took forever (that little green thing went by at least 20 times), but it went to my normal screen, but it's all really slow, and now im afraid to turn my computer off again because it might start the whole process over, and I still have no clue why it's doing this. If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it (this is driving me and my family insane).

Unfortunantly, all I know about my computer is that it is a Dell Dimension 2350 with Windows XP Home Edition (at least that is what my tower says). I always do disk clean-up, delete my cookies, and defragment, so I really don't think that is the problem. But I don't do the nvram thing (I also don't know how to).
If it helps, in the recent past, my sister got an error saying something about a "Memory Dump", and yesterday my mother also got a similiar error, but it said it fixed the problem (which it didn't). Sorry if I didn't give you the right information about my computer though.

I KNOW YOUR PRBLEM!
Ive had the exact same problem, now here's what you do to fix it:
While it is starting up (a few seconds after you press the on button, BEFORE it comes to the screen with the green thing going back and forth) hit the "F12" once or twice. Now, you will have to have the windows XP CD in your CD drive at this time. Mine came with my DELL. Now you will see a list of option, make sure ATAPI CD RW is the first one. After that, let it continue with startup and when you see it say "Press any key to boot with CD.." pressa key. After it initializes, press "r" to reach the recovery command line, and type in "chkdsk /p"
It will go to 100% and after it is done, type in this "fixboot" and it will say "a new boot device has been written" or the like. Now restart your computer and it will startup just fine.
