Sticky Power Button

Hi,

I have a Dimension 4600, which is only about one month old. After I push in the power button, it feels/sounds like the button sticks for a second or two after I release it (on its way back to its original position). It makes a small snapping noise too (upon release).

The stickiness and snapping went away for a couple of weeks, but now has returned again. It doesn't interfere with turning the power on or anything. However, I'm wondering if I should be concerned about this, or if I should just wait and see if it works itself out again (as it did before).

Contact Dell and see if you can get it replaced. Or just hit it with some lubricant.

You might unplug the system, remove the cover, and be sure that the power switch/control panel is fully snapped into the chassis and isn't loose.

If it's located properly, then the switch is just going bad.  Call tech support for a replacement.  The part number is 9Y487.

It's a very easy part to swap out. Good luck.

My 4600  initially had this problem, but it has gone away with use. If you are still in warranty, or it gets worse it might be a good idea to get it replaced, like previous posters have said.

It's important to keep this in perspective. The cheaper the parts, the cheaper the computer.

The issue may resolve itself. If it really bugs you, get Dell to send you a replacement. It's just a crummy microswitch. Cheap as dirt. So don't take no for an answer.

Thanks for the advice. I have one year of on-site service. Is this something that Dell would come on site to replace? I'm not comfortable messing with the components in the computer while it is still under warranty.

What is involved in replacing the button? Is it accessible after lifting the main cover, or does the front of the computer need to be unlatched too?

I would hope that my computer isn't constructed from parts that are overly cheap, especially since I paid quite a bit.

If the problem gets worse or never improves, I'm going to make sure it is resolved by Dell.

Hi,

I'm gonna probably wait for a bit, and see if it improves. I spoke with someone else who had the same problem, and it improved too.
