Strangest thing . . .

Question

I can hear sound when I plug headphones into the jack by the CD drawer and play a CD, but I can't hear any sounds or music from the speakers. When I go to Control Panel/Sounds the choices are black (not grayed out) but when I click on the various sounds, I hear nothing. No Online sound(s) plays either. Any ideas?

Hi,

What is your dimension type? And which operating system do you use.

Go to the BIOS, press F2 at the Dell logo, Press Caps Lock, Num Lock and Scroll Lock, so that all the three lights are lit up. Then press Alt + E. Your system will beep. Restart the computer. Check the sound options in the control panel. If this still does not work, reinstall the sound drivers, by first uninstalling them in safe mode.

The jack on the CD rom is unrelated to your sound card. You would hear music from the cdrom jack with no sound card or device installed

It would be helpful if you knew whether you have onboard sound or a sound card, and if you have a sound card which one. You should first check your volume contols and make sure you have not muted the input. Next check in the device manager and see if your sound device is still installed.

Another strange thing ... no volume control in sys tray ... could that be it?

I went the long way, start, programs, entertainment, volume control. Nothing is muted. Digital output only is checked, I unchecked and it didn't make any different. and 1_mic_boost is checked, same thing ... I unchecked and it didn't make a difference. Thanks for helping me troubleshoot.

On the back of the computer, the sound card should have a green jack and a black jack. The green is usually used for the main channels and the black is used fo a second main setup or surround sound depending on your speaker setup. Move the plug from one to the other and see if that gives you some sound

there should be a little speaker on your sys tray( bottom row of icons lower right side) Put your mouse over the speaker icon and right click Then click OPEN VOLUME CONTROLS That will get you where you have to go

First I would rule out the speakers. To do this, put the jack that goes to the sound card into the cdrom jack with a cd playing. See if you get sound from the cdrom jack to the speakers. If you do, go to add remove programs and remove the Sound blaster value program. Reboot the computer and it will find new hardware. Then use your creative sound blaster disk that came with the computer to re-install the sound card

There is only one jack and it is black with a green attachment, this is plugged into the green connection. I switched it to black but :(

Upon boot up, at the black screen it says sound driver NOT loading. How would I get a new driver? To uninstall the driver, I would go to safe mode, then device manager and "remove" sound, right? But after that ??? Creative SB Live! Value (WDM) Version 007 The Device status indicated "This device is working properly Under driver file details ... there are a lot of things but highlighted is Windows\System32|drivers|emu10k1f.sys

Linda Just to make sure. Put your headphones into the green jack at the soundcard and see if you then get sound. If you do, then yes your speakers are the culprit. Denis

Nope, no sound. So, I got her in the safe mode and removed the driver ... rebooted and it auto-detected new hardware and auto-installed (from where I don't know) the driver (I didn't put the CD in the drive) ... nothing new to report, it's still quiet here :(

If you can get sound from the headphones when you plug them in to either a jack on the sound card or into the jack on the cdrom itself. Then you should be able to get sound to the speakers by using the same jack.It seems unlikely both the soundcard and speakers are shot
