Subwoofer not working correctly?
I'm not sure if my subwoofer that came with my Dimension 8400 is designed to function this way, but it's been like this ever since I can remember. If anyone could give some insight on the following problem I'd be very greatful.
When I listen to anything on my computer, my subwoofer doesn't seem to do a whole lot. It doesn't really rumble, it just kind of grumbles faintly, and there's only a tiny bit of air being pushed around at the hole in the back. If I open up the sound controls on my computer and click over to Advanced where I can turn down the volume of each individual speaker, when I turn down the subwoofer volume nothing happens, the sound remains the same. However, if I turn the dial on the subwoofer itself down, the base drains out of the speakers and the subwoofer. So it's almost as though the dial controls the bass in the speakers themself.
There's not much in the house to compare this to except for another Dell computer that has a smaller subwoofer and speaker system, but the difference between those two is quite noticeable. The smaller subwoofer seems to work much better. I've been trying to find out of this is a hardware malfunction or a simple software/driver problem but haven't had much luck. Any help would be appreciated, and if you need any further information just ask. Thanks guys.

In almost all (actually probably all) 2.1 speaker systems if you are not getting bass or enough bass it is usually a problem in the speaker system. The first thing is to make sure the speaker system is setup correctly (there is one connection to the PC and the rest are internal to the speaker system). You can prove that since you have another PC with a different speaker system that is working by either plugging the good speaker system into the PC that has the "bad" speaker system or the bad speakers into the other PC. Or, if you have an MP3 player, CD player, etc you can plug the speakers into one of those and see if you get enough bass.
Some speakers have both a volume and bass control on them and if you are not getting enough lows (bass) try increasing the bass/tone control on the speakers. Some also have an extra bass control on the bass speaker itself. If there still is not enough bass it's probably the speaker system that is defective.
