System Restore Fail/Loading DRMK Version 8.00

Alright after a whole mess involving my connection I was advised to do a Dell system Restore. I didn't get any discs with my desktop. After making a back up I did the restore and it told me it was succesfully executed. But no, it doesn't get past

"Loading PBR for descriptor1...done

Loading DRMK Version 8.00..."

It does nothing at all and it's frustrating me to the point of wanting to throw the desktop out of my window. It started with a failing connection and it just got worst from there on, now having rendered my desktop completely useless.

I can't believe how Dell can mess up such a crucial programm. Upon searching the web there are apparentely thousands of users that have encountered this issue. And no, I did not find a useful answer anywhere.

Someone please, PLEASE help me out...?

Uhm, I dunno.. :( I didn't get much options. I opted for just files on my external HDD. I just followed the instruction on this site for a PC restore.

The XP backup "Wizard"?  What type of backup did you create? There are all sorts of options in the XP backup wizard. And I don't know if you can extract just the files you want, particularly if you compressed the files.

This is taking too much time again. I spent half the day trying to find a solution, looking back formatting my HDD and reinstalling XP would have been faster. Guess I'l just go for that now. Just a couple more questions:

- Since my back up apparentely has Windows on it, is it even possible to reinstall it on a new XP?

- Could I just reformat and install my back up without installing XP? Then just back up the files I want manually and install Windows again.

Never mind, used TreeSize to find it for me. A UMST.TMP file or something.

Sorry, now I'm totally confused! :emotion-7:

Is the backup just of your external hard drive or is it a backup of the internal hard drive? If it's just the external drive, why are you attempting to restore those files to your internal hard drive? The files should still be on the external drive, as long as you didn't delete them and/or reformat that external drive too.

That might explain why you used up all the space on the internal drive. You probably have a large external drive with lots of files on it and they take up a lot of space on the internal drive.

Since you shut the system off during the backup restore, it may be best to start over again. Disconnect the external drive and then reformat the internal hard drive.  Install XP and drivers then your software on the internal drive. Then get all the Microsoft updates too.

Unless you tell me otherwise, I'll assume all your data files are on the external drive and don't need to be restored to the internal drive.

No, no... I put the back up ON the external HDD and I wanna put it back to the main drive. But I found it through TreeSize and deleted it. It was one huge folder.

Haha yeah... I think it was the failed back up as well. No idea why it was so far hidden though... But hey, the upside of all this, it was all very educational...I guess. The HDD was the last issue I hope, the rest is working fine now. Fingers crossed reinstalling my back up won't cause any new issues... :)

That .TMP folder might have been the failed backup. If it doesn't work this time maybe you should think about a nice pocket calculator................

Good Luck!

Here is what worked for me. I have a Dell XPS 400 . I needed to Restore my computer to factory condition so I restarted and pressed Crtl F11 to get the Restore and Reboot option screen. Press Restore. Several things will happen, just let it flow until it gets stuck on the screen that says Loading DRMK Version 8.0 etc. Restart the computer using Ctrl-Alt-Del and start pressing Ctrl F11 again. You will again see the Restore and Reboot option screen. This time select Reboot. Your computer should start up as if you just took it out of the box. I have done this several times with success each time. Good luck. Tom

Your drive is broken.  Drmk is dell dos on fat32 .

You might be able to get the ghost image but in the current state I doubt it.

Have you read Dan Goodell's paper on the Dell PC Restore Partition?  It may take a little reading but you should be able to correct this problem using a partition table editor.  The message you see indicates that the restore completed successfully, but the program that helps you register your computer with Dell and places your name in the owner's box has failed to start.  If you change the active partition to the correct one, Windows should boot.
