Tag Number

Hi folks , I took delivery of my Dell Dimension 4700 yesterday 15th Oct. Wanting to get some info on partitioning etc to split my 250GB Disk I put an email together to send to Dell. On entering my Tag Code from the side of my machine ,the system responded with the fact that this was an invalid number. This cannot be so, I can read (honestly!) and am capable of copying an alpha numeric code.

Could this be because I am sending my email from my other computer (not a Dell) as I have not figured out how to switch my broadband to my new Dell yet.

Hope some of you guys can help me as service here in the UK seems to be closed for the weekend,

Cheers,

Hi,

It usually takes a week or so for the Dell support system to receive details of recently sold system tag numbers and update their records to accept these tags. It will not be because you are using a different computer.

I've had my 4700 for a couple of weeks and still couldn't log in last time I tried. Its not a major issue, it will apear it takes time.

To move your Broadband account to the new machine will depend on how you are connecting to the modem / router.  You must have installed some software to connect to the previous modem on whatever machine this was used with or on. If your modem was supplied by your ISP then then should be able to help.

Hi thanks for your help. I am really new to this Dell thing having only got it yesterday! I am with Virgin as an ISP and it looks like I can install my USB modem then type passwords etc.

Maybe you can help me on an other point can the H/D (250GB) be partitioned with partition magic or will it effect the partitions Dell has on the hard drive already? I tried to find out in the forum but some say yes and some say no!

Cheers,

Bryce

Hi,

Virgin Broadband support if you have the full £25 per month package is 24/7 365 days a year. I still pay the extra £6 per month I think it is for the free, on the local call number I gave, technical suport.

£6 a month is nothing really when something has gone wrong and you have exhausted everything you know, this and other forums and are still stuck.

Don't call them much these days, the techies are normally very good and used to people of all technical abilities and knowledge.

It can be easier late at night as there are not as many people calling in with minor issues.

Weekend days are often slow as everyone and his dog who has a problem is on the phone.

Hi,

With Virgin you can use any ADSL Broadband router you want I have a netgear router not the horrible ALCATEL flatfish thing Virgin supplied. You will need the password

Talk to Virign broadband support on 0845 6501000 Go through the voice mails to get broadband support and then tech support.

Virgin are normally very good and their tech support is not yet in India.

When I changed over to the Netgear router having installed the NIC everything came up once I installed the NIC's in each machine.

All the necessary protocols etc. are installed when you install the NIC drivers.

Partition Magic will partition the drive from how Dell supplied it.

Best configuration is to have the O/S on one partition and then install all the programs & games on another. Use another for data i.e. music & pictures  If your O/S goes wrong  for any reason then you just re-install the O/S on the C:\ partition. If you have to do this you may not need to re-install all the software. All your picures and music is more or less unaffected on another partition, unless the hard drive fails when you may loose everything.

Make the rescue disks

Backup all your critical data & e-mail before using PM. Avoid using the program if their is an increased risk of a power outage ie during a storm

Do the various PM operatioons one by one. Don't try to resize, create format change FAT systems etc all in one operation. One by one will take a little longer but is IMHO a great deal safer.

Leave the Dell diagnostic partition alone, it takes up virtually no space, you might need it one day.

Best way.

Reduce size of current partiion, thereby "creating" unallocated space
Create new partiion in whichever FAT system you want of the size you want
Format It
