Travan tape backup not using compression

Question

After upgrading from Windows 98 to XP, my Travan V tape backups are no longer using compression.  The 'Use hardware compression, if available' option is chosen in the backup setup.  However, a tape full message comes up during a backup when just under 10 Gigs has been backed up.  Could this have to do with one of the BIOS settings for the tape drive?

What backup program are you using?  If the built-in ntbackup of XP, then I think the problem is with the back-up program since what you need is software compression (i.e., the software compresses during the backup procedure).  I doubt that ntbackup provides that; and, even more, I feel fairly certainly that hardware compression is not provided by Travan drives, themselves.  Get Backup My PC (http://www.stompinc.com), which is the full featured version from which ntbackup is derived; that will compress things for you with two levels of compression available.

Thanks for the reply.  Unfortunately, I installed the trial version of Backup My PC when I first upgraded to XP, before I discovered that NT Backup was included with the OS.  I was not backing up over 10 Gig at the time, so I had no need to pay for a different backup program.  Now I cannot reinstall the trial version of Backup My PC to verify that it will solve my problem, because the 30-day trial expired months (a year?) ago.  I found a Veritas registry key and deleted it in an attempt to get the trial version to reinstall fresh and run again, but to no avail.

You might try contacting BackupMyPC either by e-mail or preferably by phone and explain the situation to them. I’ll bet they will work with you and get you a trial version (which you will probably end up buying). FWIW, I use this program and will give it my highest recommendations for features and ease of use.
