trouble loading software in new 630i
Hello all, I'm new to this forum and could not find our problem via searching the topic here.
Friday, our new 630i arrived and is now plugged in, up and running fine as of Sunday. We're running the XP Professional SP2 (pre-loaded) on it. Digital camera and printer software loaded and are functioning, but the scanner software and a machine embroidery program software are getting stuck during the installation stage. After letting it sit for 1 1/2 hours, I had to exit the installation. Cntrl+Alt+Delete is the only way to exit from the problem. We had no problems loading the scanner & machine embr. software on our old Gateway desktop and laptop (both ran WinXP as well). That only took five minutes on the Gateways.
Also, when any software is inserted into the D-drive, there is no "Auto-Run." We have to go to My Computer and click on D-drive for the software to begin. ("Auto-Play" is working fine.)
Any ideas? Yesterday, Dell tech phone support thinks we need to restore a one-day old computer back to factory settings. They never called me back yesterday to walk me thru it (I needed time to back up data I had already transferred) but if there is something the community may be aware of that we can fix ourselves, I would appreciate your input.
I'm fairly computer illiterate compared to the knowledgeable jargon I'm seeing here, so please keep it to kindergarten level replies for my sake. :smileywink:
Thanks!

Hi, I had the same problem with my new XPS630i. There is a program that Dell installs called Power DVD that causes Auto Run to not work. Uninstall this program via the control panel, add/remove programs and Auto Run should start working again, it worked for me.
This should fix the problems you are having with some programs hanging mid-install also.

You could try running the install program in compatability mode.
To do this insert the install disc, go to "My Computer" and select the drive the disc is in, then right click and select "Explore". Then look for the install program and again right click and choose "Properties", once there select "Compatability Mode". Here you will be presented with a choice of operating systems, try choosing the next one down from what you are currently running (ie xpsp1 or win98 etc), then clik "OK" untill you are back to the screen where you first found the install program. Now double click the icon and it should now run in the newly selected mode.
Hope this helps.

Your suggestion for the Auto Run worked.
Unfortunately, the Compatability suggestion did not. Minimum requirements for this software are Windows 2000, with XP being recommended. I tried it with Win2000 and it was a no-go.
To make sure my software Cd-Rom itself wasn't corrupted, I loaded on to our HP laptop. It got hung up around the same stage, wanting an Active Sync upgrade. The HP laptop is running Vista. Surely the WinXP on this Dell isn't having Active Sync issues, as there is no software patch for XP.
I'll be phoning Dell. Wish me luck. Thanks for your input and ideas.

As Paul Harvey would say, here is the rest of the story....
I took the whole system to our computer nerd, who uninstalled every program and finally had to run the computer in safe mode, in order to load this machine embroidery software (a program that loaded with no problem on 2 Gateways running XP and a HP runningVista). The problem is clearly in Dell computer itself and we're hoping it will allow the program to run properly after we get it back home.
Thanks for all your help & suggestions.

I found that ntuneservice.exe (part of the nVidia ESA programs) caused this and other optical drive problems.
Try ending this process using Task Manager and see if you can load the programs.

I'll pass this info on to my computer guy. He's still got to load the scanner software that gave me trouble.
Thanks!

He loaded the scanner software in "Safe Mode" as well, and my computer is now back home. He thinks the 'older' software programs are having issues with something on the Dell. Thank you for the suggestion, though. I'll file it away in case there are problems in the future with this desktop.
