Is Windows updated with all current critical updates?

Do you have current, real-time antivirus and firewall protection?

Have you scanned for and removed all spyware?

If the answer to any of the above is no, it's past time for a thorough security sweep of the system.

YES to all questions above.  All update current etc.    Now i'm just getting the end program  explorer.exe  not responding.  This happens everytime i log off.

Also, my system idle process sometimes uses 100% of my cpu....

Sounds like theres a corrupted OS file or program file.  I suggest running scan disk and defrag.  If that doesn't work, then I would recommend using the system restore.  restore the computer to an earlier date, before this occured.  after using system restore, run scandisk and defrag again.

thanks.  will the restore affect files,e mails etc, or just hardware "bones" of the computer?
As I was checking under system info/internet settings/internet explorer/file version
i noticed some missing files;
iecont.dll & iecontlc.dll           also,  the content adviser is disabled

no.  the only thing system restores changes are the system files, which it uses to boot up and operates the system and it will uninstall programs, windows updates/patches and drivers that you've install from the time you restore the system to and to present time.   You will not lose documents, images, files, folders, etc
