Unable to Install Printer...

I have a Dimension 3000 running XP Pro and my HP printer wasn't recognizable to the system so I tried to reinstall with no luck. Got a new LexMark X1270 for Xmas and same thing. But I am able to install the LexMark to my Latitude D620.

When I connect the printer to the Dimension, it doesn't even recognize what it is and the software will not install. When I connect it to the Latitude, it knows right away that I have a LexMark 1200 series.

Any ideas???

Maybe no help here, but with my Canon printer here it says to connect the USB cable first, then run the software, and then power it up when the prompt shows ...." detecting printer port ".
Not sure if yours is the same way though.....    Are you tunring the power on prematurely maybe ?

According to the instuctions that I have it is supposed to be powered on, insert cartridges, connect USB cable to computer, Click cancel on all add new hardware messages, and then insert cd.

Dimension 3000 doesn't recognize it. Latitude D620 knows what it is as soon as I connect it and I cancel the add new hardware messages and insert cd and is installs just fine.

Also, other USB devices work just fine.. I just reinstalled my Mbox and it is working fine, and my digital camera connects also...

The instructions say to connect the printer first and then insert the CD, but I tried this way also and it still doesn't work... The computer doesn't recognize that the printer is connected to the USB port. I have also tried several different ports.

Already did that... One other thing I noticed is when I connected it to my Latitude the little pop up box in the lower right hand corner said LexMark 1200 Series, when I connect it to the Dimension, is says USB Hub... And when I connected the Mbox to install it, it said Digidesign Mbox...

I can install any USB device that I want, with the exception of printers...

When I look at the Device Mgr, I have 3 'Intel(R) 82801EB USB Host Controllers' and 1 'Intel(R) 82801EB USB2 Enhanced Host Controller', and 4 'USB Root Hubs'. None of them have yellow '?'...

This is happening with 2 different printers and I have tried 2 different USB cables, one of which is hooked to my Mbox at this time, so I know it is good... I believe that if I had any USB printer sitting here that I would have this problem. The HP printer that I first had the problem with was working at one time. It just stopped one day... I also tried restoring to a point when I knew it worked and still have the same problem.

Have you made verification  that "print spooler" is running ?  I wonder if it has become disabled or corrupt.....  And by chance have you tried deleting any residual HP printer files that might be lingering in Device Manager; then doing a reboot and trying another clean install of the new printer ?

I stumbled onto this while doing some google searches; not sure if anything will work, but it's worth reading anyways.... maybe it will shed some light on it.

Finally got it installed... After a trip to the local Geek Squad desk at Best buy that cost me $29, they said to use the device driver disk to fix the drivers... that didn't work either so I spent the afternoon reinstalling Windows and drivers... Everything works fine now... Still not sure what caused it, but it works. and it cleaned up all bundled software that I didn't need...

Did you do a "system file check", or a complete reinstall of XP ?  I was just gonna recommend running that "system file check" this morning, but I just woke up and logged on and see you have got it straightened out already...  that's good !!
I hate problems like that... they add to my gray hairs here, lol..:smileyvery-happy:
Anyways, glad you're up 'n running & printing..

I tried to do a system restore from a date before I knew that the printer worked last. That didn't work. I also tried using the driver disk and just repairing the drivers... not luck with that either....
