Uninstalling Mouse Drivers

I have a Microsoft IntelliMouse 1.3 A PS/2 Compatible (NOT Optical), which is
behaving erratically - freezing, jumping all over screen, etc. much like
described in other posts.
I have tried cleaning, slowing pointer speed and turning off Enhance pointer
precision, unplugging and plugging it in- none of these actions have worked.
I would like to try uninstalling and re-installing drivers.
They are in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS
 i8042prt.sys   Version 5.1.2600.1106 8/18/2001
 mouclass.sys Version 5.1.2600.1106 8/17/2001
My question is when I uninstall the drivers are they deleted from the hard
disk.?
After I uninstall drivers do I unplug the mouse, reboot and then plug it in-
what is the exact procedure to re-install drivers.
I can’t find any drivers on the OEM CDs  provided by Dell- are they part of
the operating system?
I have found Intellipoint 5.2  drivers at Microsoft downloads- will these
work?
If I install Intellipoint 5.2 should I copy my original drivers to another
location first?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Before you get into all this driver stuff why not just try a different mouse to see if the mouse is the problem, which I think it is. Windows is PnP as far a the general functions of the mouse are concerned.

Yes the mouse drivers at Microsoft's website will work if you select the correct ones.

If the mouse is listed in the list of add/remove programs when deleted that software will be deleted but the mouse will still work via the PnP in Windows.

Download the drivers to the desktop and open them there. Follow the wizard instructions selecting the mouse you have and ok your way out. Open the device mgr. and highlight the mouse click to search for a better driver. That should locate the new drivers. When done open the mouse in the control panel and set to the correct model mouse you are using, then set the various settings, your done. There are probably other ways to install the drivers but this is one of the ways I use.

I don't think the drivers are the problem. You have either a defective mouse or a dirty mouse. If it has the rubber ball on the bottom remove the ball and with a Q tip dipped in alcohol (not dripping wet) clean the shafts etc. inside the mouse. If it's an optical mouse put the mouse on a clean solid color object like a piece of paper and see how it works. Optical mice don't like certain multi colored pads etc.

I highly recommend a Microsoft Intelli Point PS2 3 button Optical Mouse. It comes with a USB adaptor. You will find it at most local stores like Office Max, Staples etc. etc. If you go this route get the drivers for it off Microsfts website rather than use the cd that comes with it because it will probably load an icon in the Systems tray which you really don't want or need.

I use newegg.com for most of my computers hardware and software if it's cheaper than a local store. You have to figure shipping and tax. The OEM version is fine but you may not get the software with it, which you don't need and you may not get the USB adaptor which you also don't need. It's strictly a $$$ call.

It turns out that mouse was broken - 2 days with a new mouse and all seems to work fine.

Thanks for your response and good information and suggestions.
