USB 2.0 nightmare

Where did you obtain the drivers for the card?

Windows update. My first go around I used the drivers supplied with the card. After I reformatted and reinstalled XP I let XP find the drivers reported on Windows update as below:

Microsoft Usb Driver Version 5.1.2600.0 Device Manager

I almost suspect some old style interrupt type issue, but that just shouldn't happen. Surprisingly enough, when the 8200 hangs on boot, if you boot from the XP CD (which ultimately also hangs) and then boot normally it may boot. This is one of the trickiest ones I've encountered in a long time.

This may sound simplistic but I have to ask. Have you tried the USB 2.0 card in another slot? I would look at your 8200's manual and you will see the slot Dell uses for the Firewire card and I suggest you try that. Also the other thing I'd do is try the card in another PC and preferably an 8200 and note what BIOS Version it uses too. Good Luck.....

I have seen posts earlier in the forum from someone who had successfully installed USB 2.0 on WinXP. As I recall they used the Adaptec combo USB 2.0 / Firewire IEEE-1394card. Adaptec state their drivers are specific to their products only. What brand hardware did you buy and have you checked out their Support site?

If you have a Dell, you don't have USB 2.0 ports. I had to buy a card
