USB Headset -crackling

My system:
Soundblaster LIVE! soundcard.
Dell Dimension 4550.
2.4Ghz Pentium 4
Windows XP

Hey all.
need some help. Today i bought a Logitech Headset 20, which plugs into a USB port. I plugged it in, and all seemed fine, but then i heard this annoying crackling :(. I tried different games, Rise of Nations, Raven Shield, Max Payne 2. All of them had bits of crackling, not all the time, but often enough to make it annoying. Not only in games, but also in windows, such as when a warning dialog comes up, afterwards you hear a bit of crackling. I went to Logitech website and they didnt have any update drivers for this. Only thing that works without crackle is music in winamp. I have disconnected my speakers and switched them off, still has a problem.

Going into Sound and Audio devices : .... the default device for playback is the Logitech USB Headset. Sound recording is also my headset and the MIDI music playback is Microsoft GS Wavetable , i tried changing this MIDI, but same problem. In the performance tab of the headphones it has Hardware Acceleration : full, and Sample Rate : best. I went to Logitech website and they didnt have any drivers to update.

Should i install some driver on the Dell website? im not sure which one. So the speakers are fine, its just something about plugging the USB headphones in. I need them for gaming. I have a Dell Multimedia Keyboard with a knob to adjust volume and mute. Maybe they are clashing? it doesnt say so in device manager.

Thank you for your help.
Dave

I have had a look at this guidelines :

Q: My audio pops, scratches, and/or clicks. What could be the problem?

A: You may want to try eliminating programs starting up in the background that could be causing problems. See the following Dell Knowledge Base article for further information:

What is the Microsoft® System Configuration Utility (MSCONFIG)?

Also, You may need to run an adware removal tool on your system such as AdAware or SpyBot.

If software running in the background does not appear to be the cause of the problem, you should download and install the most recent Microsoft DirectX to try to resolve the issue. You can get the latest version of Microsoft's DirectX here.

I dont think this goes for me, because it is only the headphones, the speakers are OK. I doubt it is spyware. I scan my system quite often. I have up to date DirectX.

EDIT: I had a look under MSCONFIG, and found CREATIVE SERVICE FOR CDROM ACCESS under services. I dont know if that is causing the problem??

Most of the troubleshooting is reference to a "standard" headset, not a USB headset.  The USB Headset has it's own unique issues, which are different from "normal" audio or headset troubleshooting.

If there is no noise with the speakers connected, then there is most likely no problem with the sound card or it's configuration.  The MIDI has not thing to do with most audio - only if you are trying to play MIDI files.

You can try a different USB port on your PC and see if that makes a difference.  If you have other USB devices, disconnect them and see if that also helps.

Sound plays great through the speakers, no problem at all. Its just the USB headphones. I have emailed Logitech, but besides that, i dont have a clue whats wrong. I unplugged USB's, and that didnt work, moved it to a Dell Laptop, and it still had crackling. So i would like to know from Logitech what is going on, other customers on the site seem to be happy with the product, unless i got a faulty one. Its not like the end of the world, just would like it sorting out

Thank you for the reply.

Since the "normal" speaker audio is fine and it does the same thing on two different machines I would lean towards a defective headset unit.

Its brand new, so i hope that Logitech can fix it and otherwise get a new one. Only problem is that the box that it came in had to be cut to be opened. I will see where it goes from there. It says it has

Everyone on Amazon, from which i bought it from, says they experience crystal clear sound. Just waiting on Logitech to get back to me on the issue.
