USB Identification

How can you tell which version of USB is on your machine. I am interested in purchasing an external CDR drive which uses USB 2.0 but don't want to until I am sure that I have version 2.0 on my machine. I have a Dimension 8200 2Gig machine.

Dell has not yet shipped a machine that has USB 2.0 devices. You can buy a USB 2.0 PCI card, however, and you will be able to use USB 2 devices.

You have USB 1.1, Dell has not yet shipped any computer with USB 2.0 yet. If you want to add USB 2.0, you'll need a PCI card with USB 2.0 and add it to your computer.

Are USB 2 devices backwards compatible with USB 1.1 or just the USB 2 ports?

USB 2 devices are only compatible with USB 2 ports. However, USB 2 ports are backward capatible with with USB 1.1 devices. In other words to run a USB 2 device you need a USB 2 port. To run a USB 1.1 device, you can either use a USB 1.1 port or a USB 2 port.

Steve,

"In other words to run a USB 2
- device you need a USB 2 port."

Not true Steve. You can run a USB 2 device on a non-USB 2 machine, you just can't take advantage of the increased speed a USB 2 device is capable of. I have a USB 2 scanner, and it runs just fine on my non-USB 2.0 machine.
