usb not working

Hi,
I purchased a Dell dimension 4600i with the Windowds XP Home Operating System. Upgrated the Operating system to XP Pro. Ever since the USB ports have been a cause of frustration. In a futile attempt to resolve the problem I used the device manager to delete the USB serial controllers and the root hubs. I istallede the restore disks that were shipped with the P.C. but the sytem does not recognize the disk nor will it install the drivers from the hard drive. Update the bios, but that did not help. Has anyone else experienced a similiar problem and how do I get usb ports reinstalled?
thanks
Bpenn

When you installed XP Pro, did you install the chipset driver?

I Installed the chipset driver but the USB still does not work. Being new to this forum I think I have placed my question under the wrong heading. I'm going to pose my question on the XP Software board.
Thanks
