USB Problems after reinstalling Xp on 4600
I recently reinstalled Windows XP on my 4600 after it stopped booting. I used the CD that came with the system and then reinstalled device drivers from another Dell CD. My system is now up to date with Windows updates through Sevice Pack 3.
I had backed up everything to my external hard drive before having the boot problems. I've used this device on the system for over a year with no problems. Now when I plug in the hard drive, it says that I'm plugging a USB 2.0 device into a non hi-speed port and to plug it into one of the listed ports. It then lists all of my USB ports, including the one I've plugged it into. I've tried plugging it into different ports, but no luck.
Under the Device Manager, it shows the USB2 Enhanced Host Controller and there are no driver problems. I tried reinstalling the chipset from the drivers available on Dell's site for the 4600, but got the same results. Also, tried letting Windows update the drivers and while this did seem to do an update, still got the same results.
I've spent some time going through the forum and this seems to be a fairly common problem. One solution says to unplug all of your USB devices, go to Device Manager and uninstall the drivers and then reboot. How do I do this when the other USB device I use is my Dell FP Monitor?
Can someone please tell me exactly what drivers I should see installed for each USB entry in the Device Manager or if there is something else I need to do?
Thanks for any help. My system is otherwise working great and I guess I could live with the slow disk drive, but it took about 3 hours last night just to copy one of my backed up directories.

Thanks, are you saying a complete reinstall is needed to fix this and there's no way to get the correct USB drivers on there now?
I installed the drivers in the order that they appeared on the Dell Driver CD, so I'd have to go back and look to see what that was. Since my PC wouldn't boot at the time, I didn't have internet access and just went with the CDs. One of the solutions I saw for the USB problem was to reinstall the chipset during safe mode. I tried that later, but nothing changed.
I know I did the video driver later since it was on a different CD, so that's at least one that was out of order. The modem driver was also on a different CD, so I did that one last. I'm not using dialup, so didn't think that one mattered too much.
Item #1 on that list: Desktop or Notebook System Software didn't appear on the driver CD and isn't available on the Drivers & Downloads list for the 4600. I assume that doesn't apply or is it available somewhere else?

When you reinstall your OS there is an order of reinstalling your drivers

If it doesn't show on the drivers page then it is not important. Some systems have it others do not
The usb drivers are part of the chipset driver package.

The first thing I did after the reinstall off of the XP CD was to reinstall the chipset drivers from the Dell Device CD. When I noticed this problem and could get to the internet again, I saw an update for these drivers for the 4600, so I installed the updated drivers. It didn't help.
What would help is if someone with a Dimension 4600 could tell me what their USB devices and drivers look like. When I realized I had the problem, I tried updating the drivers by letting Windows look for updates and it did update them to something new. Same problem though. Also, what are the correct settings in the BIOS? I assume USB Emulation should be off. Is that correct? Any other settings that would affect this?
Is there any way to uninstall the USB drivers and let them automatically reinstall, keeping in mind that my monitor has a USB connection? (In other words, I can't disconnect all USB devices and then go to the device manager as some posts have suggested.)
I don't see how doing a complete reinstall would help, since I don't know what I did wrong in the first place! I think I'd just get the same results after wasting a whole lot of time. Thanks to anyone that can help.
