USB WARNING- This device could run faster.

Question

I periodically have a popup warning that a given device 'could run faster'  if plugged in to another USB port.  As far as I know all the USB ports on my Dell 8400 are USB2.  What is the problem?     Rich

Is the device self-powered? The error can occur when a device draws more power than the USB bus can supply.

I do have a USB2 hub but it is powered by its own transformer rich .

Try a usb port on the back of the computer itself and see if it improves.

The powered hub is plugged into the back of the machine. Shouldn't all the ports be USB2? I have run an IPod on a port on the side of the monitor and have never gotten the message that it could perform faster elsewhere.

I have the same problem as Richars.   I've always plugged my iPod into the side USB 2.0 but just today it stopped working. I tried the front and the back... the same thing happened. They showed up as USB 1.0 instead of 2.0

I also have this same problem and it says to try plugging it in to a different port.  There are only two on the inspiron 700m so I try plugging it in and of course it doesn't work.  I checked If somehow it got uninstalled but I still have enhanced USB 2.0 capabilites i'm just not sure why it just stopped working.

PLEASE, DOES SOMEONE FROM DELL HAVE AN ANSWER?  Every a.m. when I first use my computer which is usually on overnight the popup message that 'This device can run faster' comes on and I dutifully close the screen that shows the Device Manager for USB ports.  CAN THIS BE DISABLED since Dell claims that all the ports on my Dimension 8400 are USB 2 ports?

I guess even Dell support people don't know the answer. I have the same problem, I contacted tech support months ago, they just don't care to reply.

I am getting the same pop-up on a new DELL precision M6300 laptop.
Problem began when loading all the computers drivers was needed. There must have been some kind of screw-up when the OS re-loaded the USB drivers because now Universal USB Host Controller - 2830 is "stealing" any USB device that gets plugged in to the rear ports.

If I use the side ports the device operates at high speed as it should and deals with the USB2 Host Controller.

Plug a 2.0 device in the back and Universal USB Host Controller - 2830 takes ownership of it.
I had to uninstall and then disable this controller in order to keep it from stealing the 2.o device from the already capable USB2 Host Controllers.

Does anybody know the propper way to fix this issue so that everything can go back to normal?

I have reloaded these drivers in a million and one ways already, including using SAFEMODE to do the work. Nothing is helping.

I have now been troubleshooting this system for this exact problem for over 48 hours. I have done several clean installs and found that using windows XP in "Standard PC mode" as opposed to "ACPI Uniprocessor PC mode" causes the rear ports on a Precision M6300 notebook to work at "full" speed or 1.1 instead of high speed 2.0.

Some people with other brand laptops have fixed the problem with BIOS updates but I have the latest AO4 BIOS release and the problem continues.

Can anybody she some light?

PS: Working with ACPI on is causing latency problems on this system and the only way to remove the latency problems is to remove the battery or swith XP to Standard PC mode. This is clearly an ACPI issue.
