Video card for Dimension 2400.

Question

I have a Dimension 2400 with the onboard shared video graphics.  I would like to upgrade the graphics.  Can anybody suggest a video card for my system.  I play Half Life 2, Tour of Duty and Flight Sim 2004 also a lot of online gaming.  Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Nothing you can do to that system is going to make it a good candidate for a cutting-edge game like Half Life 2. You may be able to make it bearable with a mid-range ATI or nVidia PCI card, but to play those games well, you need a system with an AGP or PCI Express slot - that is, if you want to game, it's time to replace the system with a 4700, 8400 or XPS system.

You can make it a decent gaming machine (not great, still need to set things for performance rather than quality). You'll want more RAM, I'm running 1 GIG. I put a Radeon 9200se 128DDR PCI card in my 2400 (Yes, it worked for me). I don't game a lot, but with these upgrades I do alright when I do (and only spent around $200 for the RAM and the Vid card combined).

Ferret,   did you have to uninstall the video driver in your computer to get the card to work?  I have a 2300 and I've disabled the onboard Intel Extreme Graphics card and no dice.   I checked the FAQ and tried to set the bios for integrated devices but this is not even listed in my setup.    Mic

Get a Geforce 5700le. It's considerably more powerful than that Radeon 9200se, and shouldn't cost much more. Newegg has it intermittently for about $87.

It's the best PCI video card available right now.
